BHL-Europe and Science on a Plate

Science on a Plate, Scotland’s first festival celebrating science and food, will take place at the Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh from 31 March to 9 April 2012. The ten days of “cooking, tasting and scientific discovery for all the family”, will feature cooking demonstrations, cookery sessions for children, discussions on science and food and other fun activities.

BHL-Europe Meeting in Helsinki, Finland

From 8 to 10 February 2012, the BHL-Europe team came together in the winter wonderland of Helsinki, Finland to hold a so-called portal & ingest review meeting. We were kindly welcomed by Tiina Onttonen, Sini Kärki and Kimmo Koskinen of the Viikki Campus of the University of Helsinki. They arranged for us to meet and discuss BHL-Europe issues at the Botanic Garden in Kaisaniemi.

First look: the BHL-Europe portal

The Biodiversity Heritage Library for Europe aims to make early published biodiversity literature accessible to anyone who’s interested. One of the most important access points to this content will be the BHL-Europe portal, which will be available in no less than 12 languages! The portal’s development now nears its end – and it’s high time we take a look at the homepage’s design and functionality.

BHL-Europe featured on regional Czech radio

On 6 January 2012, the BHL-Europe project was mentioned in the talk show “Our Guest”, on the regional Czech radio station Český Rozhlas Plzeň. This station covers one quarter of the Czech Republic and is also broadcast online.

Farmers Market welcomes BHL-Europe

The Farmers market in Prague (Czech Republic) was held several days before Christmas. Given that the farmers market attracts thousands of people (especially before holiday seasons), we jumped on the opportunity to present the BHL-Europe project!

Recommendation on Digitisation and Digital Preservation

The Commission has just adopted a Recommendation on Digitisation and Digital Preservation, asking Member States to step up their efforts, pool their resources and involve private actors in digitising cultural material and make it available through Europeana.

BHL-Europe dissemination activities

Several partners participated in various institutional or project meetings and conferences to represent BHL-Europe with talks and poster presentations. BHL-Europe also co-organised the conference „Deutsches Kulturerbe auf dem Weg in die Europeana“ (German Cultural Heritage for Europeana). From 4-5 October 2010, the German Europeana project partners, members of the German Digital Library, and altogether about 200 members of German archives, museums, and libraries met in the Berlin State Library.

BHL-Europe and Europeana

Since 10 June 2010, digital content of BHL-Europe partners is available in Europeana ( – search for europeana_collectionName:087* to get the entire BHL-Europe corpus). Now 89,860 objects from three of our content providers are available: BHL, Naturalis, Land Oberösterreich. More content is currently in preparation for the Europeana Danube release in spring 2011.
